Lieutenant Colonel Michael J. Smith, USA, Ret., is the Managing Director for Intelligent Building Systems USA, managing an office and factory in the San Antonio, Texas area.
Upon his retirement from the Army, Michael entered the manufacturing industry as the Chief Operating Officer for Tank Partners, responsible for manufacturing steel tanks to the American Petroleum Institute (API) and pressure vessels to the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standard for the oil and gas industry.
During more than 20 years of active service Michael served in numerous overseas and stateside assignments. A career logistics officer, his service included assignments to the 1st Infantry Division, 1st Cavalry Division, and the 4th Infantry Division which included multiple deployments to Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq, Kosovo, and Turkey.
Michael holds a Master’s Degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma.
Lieutenant General Guy C. Swan III, USA, Ret., is Vice President of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). AUSA is “The Army’s Professional Association” and is a private, non-profit educational organization that supports the United States Army.
General Swan is a respected practitioner and frequent public speaker on homeland defense and homeland security issues, military support to civil agencies, other defense and security issues, interagency cooperation, and collaboration, strategic leadership, and the value of public-private partnerships.
General Swan is also an active member of FEMA’s National Advisory Council, the Aspen Institute Homeland Security Group, and the Council of Foreign Relations and throughout his military career and subsequent civilian career he has been recognized as an expert in the areas of emergency management, policy planning, congressional and government affairs, and advocacy. He serves on advisory boards for several companies focused on defense, security, and cybersecurity. He is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) and a Certified Protection Professional (CPP), board-certified in security management.
During more than 35 years of active service General Swan commanded at every level through 3-star Army Service Component Command. A career armor/cavalry officer, his general officer assignments include Commanding General, United States Army North (Fifth Army); Commanding General, United States Army Military District of Washington and Commander, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region; Commanding General, 7th Army Training Command, United States Army Europe; Chief of Staff and Director of Operations for the Multi-National Force in Iraq during OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM; Director of Operations for United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM); and Chief of Army Legislative Liaison.
A 1976 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, General Swan holds a Master of Military Art and Science degree from the United States Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University and was a National Security Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
